- Tell me about the present licence regulations
If you passed your test before 1 January 1997 your ordinary car driving licence permits you to drive goods vehicles up to 7.5 metric tonnes in weight. If you wish to drive any other type of goods vehicle you must hold the following licence categories:
Type of licence Permits you to drive
Category C All 4/6/8 wheeled vehicles
Category C+E Articulated vehicles. Category C Vehicles towing a
draw-bar trailer
You may undertake Category C+E training if you already hold Category C entitlement.
From January 1st 1997, new licence holders will only be allowed to drive vehicles up to 3.5 metric tonnes in weight: i.e car or small van. To drive Category C1 (3.5 - 7.5 metric tonne) vehicles you will have to take seperate test or take the Category C test. This will entitle you to drive both C and C1 vehicles. You are not allowed to take the C+E test until you have gained a Category C entitlement. You must also take a Theory Test.
- Do i need a licence to start my training?
Yes, before you can commence any training it is necessary for you to hold the correct licence.
You must have the LGV Provisional entitlement shown on your licence or (if you are upgrading to C+E) the Category C entitlement.
- WHAT ABOUT THE THEORY TEST?
The Theory test, which is taken at a recognised Testing Centre, is a Touch Screen Computer questionnaire of 60 multi-choice questions from a bank of questions covering 10 topics.
To attain a pass, you must answer 51 of the 60 questions correctly. You will be notified on the day as to the outcome of your Theory Test. A Hazard Perception Test will take place after your Theory Test.
The cost of the Theory/Hazard Perception Tests is £33 and these can be booked through Group One.
- what can you tell me about the training?
Your course will cover everything you need to know or do for the Driving Standards Agency LGV test. Each training day commences at 8.00am and ends at approximately 16.00pm.
Most of the day will be spent in the vehicle gaining driving experience on all categories of road, from country & urban to motorway situations - training in conditions you will encounter after you have passed your test.
The comprehensive home study pack, which includes a video provided on the first day of the course enables you to learn the theory of LGV driving and technical information necessary, including tachographs, vehicle safety etc.
A deposit of £20.00 is required. This is refunded in full on the provisio that all contents are returned without damage.
Your instructor will be testing you on these subjects throughout the duration of the course. Home study of these subjects allows a maximum time on the road, learning practical driving skills.
Driving tuition is usually shared between two trainees throughout the course. All training will be carried out by the same instructor.
On the days prior to your LGV test your instructor will familiarise you with the area where your test will be taken and conduct a mock test drive, simulating test conditions, thus preparing you for the actual test.
From 1st January 1997, if you wish to undertake any driver training for a Category C+E (articulated) licence, you must already have the Category C (rigid) entitlement on your licence. In addition to this you will also be required to take a Touch Screen Computer Theory Test.
A Category C+E (articulated vehicle) test cannot be taken until you have gained a pass in both the Category C (rigid vehicle) Theory and practical tests.
This ruling applies to everybody, UNLESS you already hold a Category C licence. If this is the case you DO NOT have to take the Theory Test.
- PLEASE TELL ME ABOUT THE TEST
Your LGV test belongs to you and its success depends on you. Combine your own ability and put in to practice your instructors advice and you will find that youe time has been well spent.
Don't forget to make good use of your Home Study Pack, there is a lot of useful information contained within the books and the video to back-up your on the road training. The standard of the test is high and The Driving Standards Agency book, in our pack, details the requirements of the practical LGV test in full.
The tests are pre-booked with appointments at the Lancing or Guildford Test Centres and the cost of using the vehicle on the day of the test is included in the course fees.
- how do i book with group one?
Just contact our office and we will be able to make an appointment for you to take an assessment drive, or discuss a convenient date for you to commence your training.
Assessments can be taken during the week or at weekends if more convenient.
We will then send you an invoice and written confirmation of your course or assessment booking. A deposit will be required to secure any course bookings made. Assessment charges may be paid on the day of the drive.
- why do i need an assessment drive?
Quite simply because everybody has a different level of driving skill, ability and past experience to call upon.
An assessment drive is not a test! Your instructor is there to help and advise you, which he will do throughout your drive.
He will provide you with a written copy of your assessment, explain the grades and of course answer any questions that you may have. He will also recommend how many days training you will need to successfully reach the required test standard and accordingly you will see that our course fees are charged on a daily basis.
- what do i do next?
