From Sept 2009 all LGV drivers MUST complete The Driver CPC Training course before they can apply for a licence to drive any LGV.

The Driver CPC is for LGV and PCV drivers who drive professionally throughout the UK. It has been developed as a requirement of the EU Directive 2003/59, which is designed to improve the knowledge and skills of professional LGV and PCV drivers throughout their working life.

LGV Licence Details

If you passed your car test before January 1997 then you probably have C1 entitlement on your car licence.

Drivers aged 21 or over without C1 entitlement can skip a grade and go straight to LGV C.

You must pass LGV C before obtaining C+E. Holding your full LGV C, with provisional C+E entitlement, you can progress easily on to C+E without delay with our Articulated Truck with 13.6 meter twin axle Trailer.

The DSA permits LGV C licence holders to obtain a full Manual PCV licence by passing a test on a PCV automatic coach.

PCV Licence Details

You may already hold a D1 restricted licence for social and pleasure use. If you are being paid to drive a minibus (i.e. for hire of reward) you will need to pass a PCV test.

Passing a test using a vehicle with an automatic gear box means you won’t be entitled to drive a manual transmission.

Holders of a PCV automatic licence can upgrade to an all-types licence by sitting a test on a manual coach, or get two licences at the same time, as passing on LGV C will also upgrade the automatic licence.

How to obtain Provisional LGV/PCV entitlement

You will need a vocational licence application pack which we would be pleased to send to you by post, or you can collect from our office or from a large post office.

The pack includes the following:

D2 : Application for Large Goods Vehicle (LGV) or Passenger Carrying Vehicle

D4 : Medical Examination Report

INF2D : How to fill in your LGV or PCV driving licence application form

INS115 : Driving licence fees and the Premium Service

If you have a form D1 in your pack please call our office for further help

STEP ONE - Arrange a Medical Examination for the earliest possible date

Take the form D4 to your doctor to complete.

Alternatively we recommend the following clinic who usually can arrange medicals quickly and at a lower cost – mention GROUP ONE LGV TRAINING for discount rates.

Crawley Medical Center

Wednesdays 8.30am - 11am and Friday 11am - 7pm - £42

16a Brighton Road, Crawley - 01293 538 538

Please pay for medicals by cash or cheque with guarantee card

STEP TWO - Complete green form

1) Please complete from D2 with your name, address, residency, eyesight and hearing details (sections 1, 1a and 2).

2) In Section 3 – the licence you want, after stating the date you want the licence to start, tick the appropriate box for your provisional:

Tick “C” for provisional for Rigid Lorries up to 30 tonnes (old HGV2)

Tick "C1" for a provisional up to 7.5 tonne (C1+E is 7.5 tonne + trailer).

Tick “D” for provisional for buses and coaches. Tick D1 if you want a provisional for a minibus.

Or tick BOTH C and D boxes for both entitlements at no extra cost – you may need the other provisional in the future.

N.B. At this time you cannot apply for LGV C+E (for drawbars & articulated vehicles). You must pass the LGV C before C+E provisional can be obtained.

3) Previous licence details (section 4) and Your Health (section 5) are straightforward. If you do not have a Photo ID licence you will also need to complete section 6 & 7 and we recommend using the Post Office Premium Service (Take your UK passport, all the completed forms and £4 to a main PO. They will check all your application and return your passport straight away).

4) Send completed applications, licence (and ID if appropriate to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1BR. This is no charge to obtain the provisional.

5) Your ID (if submitted) and new Photo Card Licence and Counterpart showing your provisional will be sent after approximately two weeks.

If obtaining your provisional (or the return of your car licence) is urgent it is possible to get your licence quickly by enclosing a letter with explaining your circumstances and forward with your application forms to:

Wendy Burrows, POL 19, DVLA, Swansea, SA6 7JL.
